Morning everyone. This weeks Out of the Hat Creations challenge is twinchies. Twinchies are 2″ x 2″ squares. They can be made from any fabric you like and can be decorated in any style of your choice. For full details of the challenge, to see Janet’s, Chrissie’s and Sandra’s fab projects, all of the wonderful entries and details of Janet’s prize giveaway click on the link above.
For my challenge entry I made some paper/fabric twinchies.
I started off by laying a piece of muslin (approx 20 cms x 15 cms) on to a piece of A4 copier paper and using a paint brush I coated one side of the muslin with a very thin coat of watered down PVA glue. I then placed on top of this, bits of lace, torn paper, postage stamps and some fibres. I then coated one side of a piece of white mulberry paper (same size as the muslin) with PVA glue and layed it, glue side down, on top of the muslin trapping all the bits and pieces in the middle. I then painted some PVA glue over the top of the m. paper gently pushing out any air bubbles as I went. There is probably another way of doing this but this is how I made these. When it was all dry I chose areas I liked and cut out the little 2″ x 2″ squares using a ruler and craft knife. Just to high light certain raised areas, I rubbed in some gold wax and edged the sides with gold marker pen. Using gold thread, I stitched a little and wrapped the thread around the squares for added decoration. The pink areas on these are the fibres, paper and postage stamps showing through the m. paper.
Happy Crafting everyone.
Best Wishes Florence x

Hello Florence
The beautiful soft muted tones and so tactile to look at, gorgeous and so satisfying when creating from scratch.
It is hard to believe that the holly is a stamped image, it is coloured to perfection and such a gorgeous idea.
So glad you shared.

Hi Lynne. Hope you are ok. I always love visiting your blog. I am a bit behind with my visits, apologies, but It was such a treat catching up with all of your projects this morning. These squares are really soft colours in real life, but I had difficulty taking the photo. At least this photo shows the textures up a little. The gold looks a little brown but I am sure everyone will get the idea of them. Thank you for your lovely comments.

Fabulous technique with your first twinchies (am I right in saying this is what you call ‘serendipity’?) and the holly one is such a fabulous idea. You have coloured it to perfection and I love the crackle. xx

Hi Suze. Hope all is well. Y’know, I remember making these fabric and paper sandwich sheets in junior school. I am not really sure what the real name is. I’m not good at putting labels on things. The names seem to change with fashions. Serendipity is making up backing sheet using small bits of paper… I think!!. Our Von from Messy Me has a great tutorial on the serendipity technique which can be seen here http://messyme-von.blogspot.com.es/2011/03/serendipity.html
It’s funny after I visited you last night I thought we have both been thinking along the same lines whilst crafting last week. Especially with the little oriental coins. I couldn’t say anything yesterday without giving the game away. Great minds hey!! 🙂 Thank you for calling in and for your lovely comments. Always great to hear from you.

Your twinchies are wonderful!! however I totally love the napkin ring holder version, its such an inspired Idea and you executed it so beautifully it looks like antique enamel.

Hi Amanda. Hope all is well. Y’know, about two years ago I saw some little enamel napkin holders similar to this. Although individually they were not a lot of money if you needed to buy say 8 or 10 then they got expensive. I am such a cheap skate! LOL! It is probably where the idea came from for these. I will make some more on some thicker material and then hopefully they will look more like tiles. Always great to hear from you. Thank you for your lovely comments.
